EDUCATION
July 1, 2016, is the beginning of the new academic year. I am extremely excited about the work I’ll be doing and I’m sure that all of the students will benefit from my experience as a supervisor.
My team is researching children’s health in the context of dealing with referrals, with a slight focus on obesity prevention. Obesity is a national health crisis for UK children aged between 2 and 14 years. It can lead to many health issues, such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and stroke. Referrals are received from public and private care providers. These include healthcare, children’s, or family-based health and social services.
To begin working on their intervention plan, I found it helpful to work out the personal health records of all children identified, including both children and staff.
There’s so much to learn about working with children. I’ve come on this course to gain information that I can apply to my role.
Children are children. Children are certainly special. However, there are considerations to a child’s health that will need to be considered to work with the child’s health, including physical health, learning, and behavior.
The other challenge is that children may have physical limitations such as speech and cognitive difficulties. However, they are not always obvious from a child’s report.
Improving children’s health is an important challenge in the context of supporting children. Improving children’s health increases healthy outcomes, reduced disease occurrence, and improves their physical, mental, and social health. We are all working towards this healthy goal through our roles to achieve the UK government’s childhood obesity strategy.
There are many challenges to facing children. Working with children presents challenges. Working with children brings children’s issues to the fore. It is important to work in partnership with children and their families and their care providers.
There are various challenges in the context of working with children. We have to remember that all children need to be treated in accordance with their needs. The needs and interests of the children need to be considered but it’s important not to overload children with information.
One of the most challenging aspects of working with children is working with children and their families. Communication is key and each child has their own needs. Communication could be challenging. We must remember that working with children is challenging work. We will likely be working with children in very different settings. The children’s role and their needs will be different and will vary. Emphasis is placed on the understanding of children. Working with children requires a solid understanding of the children’s concerns and needs.
The subject works has also taught me to value personal health records. This is particularly useful when working in the context of working with children, as this allows us to see the history of both families.
One of the problems I’ve had to address with children’s health professionals is how to remember that they are children. Although in a controlled environment, children are still children. They require special care. All children need to be treated in accordance with their needs. Children should feel they are acknowledged and that they have their needs respected.
As a supervisor, I will have a chance to experience the child-centered approach to children’s health, which I have got to know in other ways. Kids are special, they need help and support and we need to know they will receive it.
We need to give children the support they need in the context of their health. We should pay more attention to children’s participation and engagement in discussions about their health.
Everyone needs to play their part and consider children’s health issues. We need to understand that children need to be treated as children. Children’s health professionals need to understand the health issues children have. A lot of work is needed to implement positive change within the health system, and it is not just about children.
Children’s health practitioners are confident and understanding of the importance of research into children’s health. There is now a very important research program underway. Many health professionals have access to the results of large clinical studies which will have research implications for all health professionals involved in children’s health.
